The Art of Editorial Layout
Editorial design is one of the most rewarding disciplines because it sits at the intersection of art and communication. Every spread is a composition. Every page turn is a moment of discovery.
Working on Vellum Magazine reinforced my belief that restraint is a designer's most powerful tool. The temptation to fill every inch of a page is real, but the best layouts breathe. They give the reader's eye a place to rest and a path to follow.
Typography choices carry enormous weight in editorial work. A typeface isn't just a vehicle for words — it sets tone, pace, and personality before a single sentence is read.
I approach each spread as both a standalone composition and part of a larger rhythm. The reader should feel a sense of flow throughout the publication, with moments of surprise that keep the experience dynamic.
